A bronze opon or bronze divination tray for babalawos in the Ifá religion is a sacred ritual object used by Ifá priests (babalawos) to perform divinatory consultations. If it has a diameter of between 15 and 16 inches (38 to 40 cm), it would be a medium-sized tray, suitable for individual use during divination ceremonies.
This opon would be finely crafted in bronze, with a defined circular edge. On its surface, there would be allegorical engraved figures, representing spiritual and mythological symbolism related to Ifá. These figures could include deities such as ESU, who is the central deity of wisdom and divination, as well as other symbols like cowrie shells, animals (such as snakes or lizards), palm trees, or ritual tools that have specific meanings within the Ifá belief system.
The center of the opon is the area where Ifá signs or odu are traced during consultations, while the engravings on the edge serve as a symbolic representation of the spirits and energies that the babalawo invokes during their work. Bronze, being a resistant and durable material, symbolizes the permanence and spiritual power that the tray represents in Yoruba traditions.
