Yewá – the virgin Orisha who guards the dead | Inshe Miami

🕊️ Who is Yewá?

Yewá (also Yegguá) is the Orisha of purity, virginity, and the cemetery. She lives among the graves and is responsible for delivering the bodies of the deceased to Oyá. Together with Oyá and Obba, she forms the group of Orishas who guard the cemetery.

She is serious, quiet, and very demanding: in her presence, one does not shout, fight, or speak of impure things. She is asked for peace for the dead, tranquility in the home, chastity, and protection.

📜 The Legend of Yewá

A patakí tells of Yewá, the daughter of Oddúa, a young woman so pure and so beautiful that her father kept her in his palace away from everyone. One day Changó saw her and wanted to win her over.

Embarrassed to have awakened that desire, Yewá asked her father to send her to a place where no man could see her. Oddúa sent her to the cemetery, and she has lived there ever since, silently guarding the dead.
