🕊️ Who is Obba?

Obba (also Obba Nani or Obbá) is the Orisha of fidelity, marriage, and sacrifice for love. She was the rightful wife of Changó and represents an unbreakable loyalty, even when it hurts.

Obba is also the guardian of cemeteries and graves, along with Oyá and Yewá. She is a serious, wise, and reserved Orisha, knowledgeable in words and study. She protects homes, commitments, and women who fight for their families.

⛪ Why is she celebrated on November 25th?

In Afro-Cuban tradition, Obba is syncretized with Saint Catherine of Alexandria, whose feast day is November 25th, and in other houses with Saint Rita of Cascia (May 22nd). Both saints represent steadfast faith, study, and sacrifice, just like Obba.

📜 The legend of Obba's ear

A patakí tells that Obba loved Changó so much that she sought any way to keep him happy at home. Oshún, jealous of that love, told her that the secret to keeping Changó from ever leaving was to cut off an ear and cook it in his favorite food.

Obba, out of love, did it. When Changó saw the ear on his plate, he became angry and left her. Wounded, Obba retired to the cemetery, where she has lived ever since, caring for the dead. That is why she is depicted covering her ear with a scarf or her mask.

The story teaches that true love does not demand sacrificing who you are, and that loyalty deserves respect. The versions vary from one house to another.

🙏 Prayer to Obba Nani

Obba Nani, faithful mother and wise queen,
you who gave everything for love,
teach me to love without losing myself
and to be loyal without ceasing to love myself.

Watch over my home and my commitments,
keep away betrayal and lies,
and give me your serene strength
to keep standing when the heart hurts.

Obba Nani, guardian of those who rest,
bless my family and my deceased loved ones.
Thank you today and always. Ashé.
